🖤 Wednesday (Netflix) – A Stylishly Spooky Spin-Off That Works
Review by Bing Watchers
Streaming Platform: Netflix
Created By: Alfred Gough & Miles Millar
Directed By: Tim Burton (Episodes 1–4)
Starring: Jenna Ortega, Gwendoline Christie, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán
🧠 The Premise
Netflix’s Wednesday reimagines the iconic daughter of the Addams Family, giving her a standalone series filled with murder, mystery, and boarding-school drama. After being expelled (yet again), Wednesday Addams is sent to Nevermore Academy—a school for “outcasts” with supernatural abilities. Think Hogwarts meets gothic murder mystery.
But this isn’t just a teen drama with a dark filter. Wednesday finds herself entangled in a local murder investigation, uncovering family secrets, ancient prophecies, and a lot of monster-sized surprises.
🎭 The Performance
Jenna Ortega is the beating black heart of this series. Her deadpan delivery, razor-sharp timing, and complete immersion into the character make her the definitive Wednesday of this generation. She balances stoicism with just enough nuance to make Wednesday human, even when she’s emotionally cold.
Supporting characters—like Gwendoline Christie as the school principal or Hunter Doohan and Percy Hynes White as the conflicted love interests—add layers to the school setting, though some characters fall a bit into cliché territory.
🎨 Visuals & Direction
With Tim Burton directing the first half of the season, the Wednesday aesthetic is exactly what you’d expect: gothic, whimsical, and weird in all the right ways. The show is beautifully shot with moody lighting, quirky costuming, and set designs that scream Halloween all year round. It’s very Burtonesque, and that’s a good thing.
The CGI (especially for Thing, the disembodied hand) is surprisingly well done, blending seamlessly with the real-world visuals. The monster design, though, might divide viewers—it’s bold, cartoonish, and slightly jarring compared to the show’s otherwise elegant production.
🧩 Writing & Pacing
The series blends teen drama tropes (love triangles, school rivalries, hidden powers) with murder-mystery intrigue, which mostly works. Some subplots feel predictable or forced, but the central mystery is engaging enough to keep you clicking “Next Episode.”
There’s also a clever mix of humor and darkness—Wednesday’s one-liners are sharp, and the writing often pays homage to the original Addams Family charm while updating it for modern audiences.
🕷️ Verdict
Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)
Netflix’s Wednesday is a stylish, clever, and entertaining series that refreshes a beloved character for a new generation. While it leans into teen series clichés at times, it’s saved by a stellar performance from Jenna Ortega, gothic world-building, and a genuinely fun mystery.
Whether you’re a longtime Addams Family fan or just love a good supernatural whodunit, Wednesday is worth the watch—dead serious.
